Nitrofurantoin - medicine used to treat bacterial infections of urinary tract.
This remedy has an antimicrobial action and breaks the proteins synthesis in bacteria and cell membrane permeability. Nitrofurantoin is efficient against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Shigella dysenteria spp., Shigella flexneri spp., Shigella boydii spp., Shigella sonnei spp., Escherichia coli, Proteus spp.).
The preparation is used to treat such urinary tract infections as pyelitis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, and also infection prophylaxis in the urological operations, cystoscopy, and catheterization.
Contraindications: hypersensitivity, kidneys and liver dysfunction, lack of glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase, acute porphyria, pregnancy, early infancy (up to 1 month).
Possible side effects are nausea, vomiting, cough, headache, drowse, chill and skin allergies.
